Established in 1970, Kalmyk State University stands as the oldest and one of the largest higher education institutions in the Republic of Kalmykia. Over the decades, the university has evolved into a prominent center for academic excellence and research, attracting students from various regions. 

The university was founded on January 1, 1970, transitioning from the Kalymk Pedagogical Institute to become the first state university in the republic. Initially, it consisted of three faculties: Biological, Philological, and Physico-Mathematical, along with nine departments. Presently, Kalmyk State University boasts 10 faculties, and the Institute of Kalmyk Philology and Oriental Studies offers a wide array of programs across various disciplines.
