In its latest press release, the Under Graduate Medical Education Board released a new set of guidelines, particularly for the conduct of internships, for Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs). This announcement follows the previously issued circular dated 9th May 2023, which addresses the provision of supplementing online classes with practical training.
No More Compensatory Certificates
The Under Graduate Medical Education Board, National Medical Commission has observed malpractices in order to obtain compensatory certificates from their parent universities for online classes conducted during their course completion. The Board further stressed on not to compromise the quality of training provided to future doctors. To avoid any malpractices, the board decided that certificates claiming compensation for online theory classes shall no longer be accepted.
Mandatory Internship Requirement
In light of this decision, FMGs who have attended any part of their class online shall have to pass the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE). Subsequently, the graduates are further required to undergo mandatory rotating medical internship for a period of two to three years. This includes one year of repeated internship to ensure comprehensive practical and clinical training.
Since its publication, the new regulations brought by the Under Graduate Medical Education Board of the National Medical Commission are a crucial step toward ensuring that all the medical professionals in India are adequately trained and prepared for their roles.
