National Medical Commission, erstwhile known as the Medical Council of India has been stirring up quite a long time since the past few months. Apart from the general administrative decision, the Commission has also been taking enormous steps to strengthen healthcare from roots to shoots. After the draft referencing for the foreign medical education to the recent proposal of fee fixation for the medical studies in India, the commission has been a witness, yet again, of a major change.
Dr. Rakesh Kumar Vats, the now-former secretary of the NMC, ended his tenure, which was earlier planned till 2020. The new secretary of the NMC would be Dr. Sandhya Bhullar, IPS (GJ:2003).
Yesterday, Dr. RK Vats resigned as a secretary from the Nation Medical Council. The rumors about his resignation have been pertaining for quite a while. Dr. Vats has been involved with the Medical Council of India since 2010. He was also actively involved in the restructuring of MCI and the formation of the NMC later the same year.
As of today, the cabinet has accepted the resignation of Dr. Vats and has announced the new secretary as well. In the notice issued by the Department of Personnel and Training, Government Of India, dated 27-05-2021 has mentioned:
The Appointment Committee of the cabinet has approved of the following:
- Post-facto approval of the acceptance of the resignation of Dr. R.K. Vats from the post of secretaryNational Medical Commision, with effect from 25-05-2021; and
- Appointment of Dr. Sandhya Bhullar, IAS (GJ:2003), Joint Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs as secretary, National Medical Commission
Dr. Sandhya Bhullar is a 2003 batch IAS of Gujarat cadre. She has worked as a Director, for the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India under the Central Staffing Scheme in the year 2019. In 2020, he was laterally shifted to the Department of Economic Affairs, under the Ministry of Finance. Earlier, this year, she was promoted to be the joint secretary of the very same department.
