The NEET 2020 results are out and students have outperformed expectations despite the pandemic and lockdown taking a toll on physical and mental health. The medical colleges will soon start operating and taking admissions for the MBBS aspirants.
However, the students were left in shock when the Haryana govt. announced the fee hike in MBBS programs, and now the fee is about 40 lakhs for a four-year course. The technicalities lie with the introduction of bonds for students, for which a system of loans has been put into place. The government has also revised the fees for medical courses. The motive behind the introduction of bonds is to ensure that the MBBS pass-outs are retained in government service for seven years.
The policy states that the students will have to furnish a bond with the medical education department, where the government will provide an education loan of 10 lakh rupees per year for four years.
After five and a half year moratorium period, the students will have two options of repayment. The first is where the government will provide jobs to the pass out students and the loan will be repaid by the Haryana govt. for the next seven years.
On the other hand, if the student does not wish to work with the govt., they will have to repay the loan by themselves. The main concern is with the guidelines themselves, as the relaxation for the reserved students and for those from underprivileged backgrounds is not clear. Even the fees for postgraduate courses have been hiked by 25000 rupees and now stand at 1.25 lakhs.
The government however has clarified their stand by promoting this move as an assurance for job security and has justified the course fee of 10 lakh per annum in line with the MBBS course and facility provided by the colleges. The students however are unhappy and especially those from unprivileged backgrounds, are left with little choice, due to high fees.
