NMC Declared a Two-Year Extension of Internship for FMGs in India

May 28, 2024

On May 15th, 2024, the Under Graduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) of the National Medical Commission (NMC) issued a public notice informing Foreign Medical Graduates about the extension of the two-year internship program in recognized non-teaching hospitals in India. The NMC has decided to extend the deadline from May 2024 to May 2026.

In the previous circular dated 09.05.2023 issued by UGMEB, a Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship for Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) was to be conducted for one year according to the NMC guidelines. Following numerous representations from Medical Councils and FMGs regarding the challenges faced in securing internship placements, the NMC has decided to extend the internship period to two years.

This decision will enable the councils as well as Foreign Medical Graduates to address the challenges faced in securing internships in India. It also helps aspiring medical professionals by providing them with the opportunity to complete this crucial phase of their training to become qualified practitioners in India.
