On 1st April 2024, The Supreme Court made a landmark decision for Foreign Medical Graduates. “Foreign Medical Graduates cannot be treated differently”- Supreme Court Stated. In this landmark decision, the Supreme Court mandated equal stipends to foreign medical graduates at par with the Indian Medical Graduates.
Furthermore, the SC directed the National Medical Council (NMC) to further furnish the details regarding the equal stipends for Foreign Medical Graduates particularly in the government medical colleges- Atal Bihari Vajpayee Government Medical College in Vidisha, Dr. Laxmi Pandey Government Medical College in Ratlam, Employee State Insurance Corporation Medical College in Alwar. This decision came after hearing the plea of a group of doctors that some medical colleges do not pay stipends to foreign medical graduates during their internships.
Earlier, on January 23, the SC had requested a response from both, the National Medical Council (NMC) and the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Government Medical College after a petition filed by five foreign medical graduates.
