The medical profession is one of the noble professions as doctors not only serve the country or society, but they serve humankind. In India, it’s a dream of every other child to become a doctor and bring a change in the healthcare of the country.
Every year lakhs of students apply for one of the biggest medical entrance examinations in the world, i.e., National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). NEET is a medical entrance examination organized by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for all those students who are interested in seeking admission in MBBS and BDS medical program in the medical universities recognized by the Medical Council of India (MCI).
Every year there is a slight increase in the percentage of students registering for this big entrance examination. If we look upon 2019 data, NTA has observed that there was an increase of 14.52% of candidates who appeared for NEET 2019 as compared to NEET 2018. This year also, NTA has published a report which clearly states that there is a minor rise of 4.87%, or we can say about 74,083 students as compared to last year, who have successfully applied for NEET 2020. So, in total this year 15,93,452 candidates have successfully registered for NEET 2020 till January 6, 2020.
The above-mentioned number indicates that this year the competition is going to be cut-throat competition as more than 21 students will be competing for a single MBBS seat in the upcoming medical entrance examination, NEET 2020!
Despite internet restrictions in Jammu and Kashmir, an astonishing rise of 33,357 candidates have successfully filled up NEET 2020 application form. Due to the internet lockdown problems faced by the majority of students in the state, NTA has released an offline application form and thus has also set up various nodal centers for NEET 2020. So, the aspiring students from Jammu and Kashmir shouldn’t miss the opportunity to test their skills and reach the ultimate goal of their life.
As stated by the Indian Express, Maharashtra came up with the highest number of NEET 2020 applications, i.e., 2.28 lakh candidates! After Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh ranks on the second position with 1.54 lakh candidates. Meanwhile, Karnataka received a total of 1.19 lakh NEET applications, followed by Tamil Nadu and Kerala with 1.17 and 1.16 lakh aspiring medical students, respectively!
Lakshadweep, which has low population density, has received a total of 183 NEET 2020 registrations, followed by Daman and Diu and Andaman and Nicobar islands with 707 and 800, respectively.
From 2020 onwards, it has been declared that NEET is now a mandatory step to qualify to seek admission into AIIMS and JIPMER. Though the numbers seemed to be less than expected when compared to last year’s entries. Previously, both these reputed and esteemed institutions used to enroll candidates based on their entrance examination, which is not the case this year. Previously, both these institutions used to enroll candidates on the basis of their self-designed examinations, which will not be the case this year. Students who are interested in pursuing MBBS from abroad also have to qualify NEET 2020, which is going to be held on May 3, 2020.
This year NEET 2020 will commence entrance examination for admission to around 76,928 MBBS, 2,699 BDS, 52,720 AYUSH, 1205 AIIMS, 200 JIPMER and 525 BVSc seats in various government, private, central/ deemed universities along with 15 AIIMS and 2 JIPMER institutions present PAN India.
As stated by our Union Minister Harsh Vardhan, this year, the government has planned to make 75,000 MBBS seats available across the country. However, this dream is far-fetched. As in 2014, the Government of India has declared to add 10,000 MBBS seats by 2020-2021. This decision was initially taken in 2014, after which the government has considered the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s proposal related to the Centre-sponsored scheme for increasing the number of medical seats in India and updating the infrastructure and facilities of the government medical colleges. Under this scheme, the funding pattern holds the ratio of 70:30 between the central government and the state government, with an exception for all the north-eastern states where the funding pattern has a ratio of 90:10.
In February 2019, the cabinet gave the green signal for the construction of 24 new Government Medical Colleges accompanied by existing district/referral hospital by 2020-2021. All these additional medical institutions will add around 8200 new MBBS seats.
National Testing Agency (NTA) also extended the last date to fill up the NEET 2020 application form from December 31, 2019, to January 6, 2020. NTA has also opened the NEET 2020 application correction window to makes changes in the particulars of the application form from January 15, 2020, which is open until December 31, 2020.
